Some "experts" try to make an explanation of carpal tunnel syndrome complicated (and in some cases it may be), but most people do not realize that your typical carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) cases, simply means that the median nerve that passes through its wrist (carpal tunnel) is compressed or "pinched" in some way. Really, any condition that makes the small size of the tunnel, or makes other things / objects in the tunnel can produce more carpal tunnel symptoms.
My patients often describe the symptoms as a gradual numbness and tingling, dull ache or pain in your hands ... They say that "the fells as if they were MY HANDS sleep !"
Therefore, during the time when enough pressure builds on the median nerve, blood flow in the outer layer of the nerve can be reduced or stopped all together. If this goes on long enough to eventually cause the death of nerve ... Sometimes the cause of your symptoms to be permanent! (Fortunately, this can take some time to happen)
Most patients seem to have more stiffness and pain at night or upon waking in the morning .. so bad that they wake up and they need to shake or rub your hands. This is where the ice packs and pain relieving creams and gels after work or play really helps! (or in my case) after pulling weeds or mowing grass.
is interesting (to me at least) is that carpal tunnel anatomy of the median nerve only supplies the thumb, index, middle and half of the ring, well, guess where you have carpal tunnel symptoms? .. You got it! Only in those areas!
Also, this is where during the day and night splints when you sleep can make a big difference in your overall carpal tunnel symptoms.
Some patients complain of releasing things, or who have symptoms, and writing, and gripping the steering wheel. They sometimes complain of weakness in the thumb, hand and wrist, or pain going up the forearm, or neck and shoulder pain, but watch out for this ... it can not be carpal tunnel syndrome at all! As there are other conditions that mimic CTS cam.
What you just read ... is what I described in my patients for years to help them understand their situation and hope it helps you as well! That way you can get better and move on with your life!
